Phoenix Rising
The United Arab Emirates
Past, Present and Future
Werner Forman
Introduction by Michael Asher
Hardback, 28 x 25 cm, 208 pp.

Few nations on earth have experienced more complete and far-reaching change over the past few decades than the United Arab Emirates. Today a land of six-lane highways and glittering streams of motorcars, where space-age cities of ivory-white and crystal glass emerge like a mirage from the haze of desert and sea. The photopgrapher Werner Forman explores in a series of superbly evocative images, themes of continuity and change in a country with a long and ancient history.

Werner Forman was born in Prague in 1921. He began his photographic career at the age of 14, when, fascinated by aeroplanes, he worked as the official photographer of the Czech State Airlines. Werner Forman has compiled more than a hundred photographic books, including the highly successful Chinese art, the acclaimed Tapestries of Egypt (1960), Westminster Abbey (1970), Islam in the West (1977), Eskimos (1986), and Werner Forman's New Zealand (1994).

Michael Asher is one of Britain's most prominent desert explorers. A former member of the SAS, he taught in the Sudan and administered a UNICEF health project among the Beja nomads. He made the first east-west crossing of the Sahara by camel. He is the author of three books on the Sahara and the Sudan, and most recently of a biography of Wilfred Thesiger. In 1993 he received the Royal Geographical Society's Ness Award for his desert exploration.
