Contemporary Art Brazil also features four scene-setting essays. The Mexican-born, London-based independent curator Pablo León de la Barra approaches Brazilian art from a non-Brazilian perspective. The art historian Kiki Mazzucchelli reviews the history and critical importance of the São Paulo Biennial. Rodrigo Moura, editor, writer and curator at Inhotim, surveys the key trends in Brazilian art today. Finally, the Brazilian art historian, curator and writer Paulo Venancio Filho addresses the history of Modernism in Brazil. Hossein Amirsadeghi is a long-time publisher, writer, editor and creative entrepreneur with a recent focus on the world of contemporary art. He has written, edited and published many books on a wide range of subjects, produced a major international conference on art and patronage in the Middle East (2012), and made several television documentaries. His latest books include Frozen Dreams: Contemporary Art from Russia and Sanctuary: Britain’s Artists and their Studios, both published by Thames & Hudson. He is currently working on a book about leading American artists, as well as surveys of contemporary art in Korea, Mexico and Scandinavia.

Pablo León de la Barra is an independent curator, editor, writer and artist. Co-director of the Novo Museo Tropical, he also founded and directed the First Bienal Tropical in San Juan Puerto Rico (2011). Between 2002 and 2005, he was co-director of 24-7, an artist-curatorial collective in London, and, for the following three years, artistic director of the Blow de la Barra Gallery, London. He has acted as advisor/curator for several art fairs, and is currently editor of the art blog ‘Centre for Aesthetic Revolution’.

Kiki Mazzucchelli, an independent curator and art critic, is currently researching her doctorate at TrAIN, University of the Arts, London. In 2009 she was resident curator at the Fundación Gilberto Alzate Avendaño, Bogotá. She has lectured at the Henry Moore Foundation, Leeds; the Royal College of Art, London; and the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Bogotá, and has written for Artecontexto, Cadernos do Videobrasil, Flash Art and other publications.

Rodrigo Moura is a curator, editor and art writer. Curator at Inhotim, Brumadinho, since 2004, he was formerly assistant curator (2001–3) and curator (2004–6) at the Museu de Arte da Pampulha, Belo Horizonte. He collaborates regularly with international publications and catalogues, and in 2011 was curator of Revista, the seventh annual Cuaderno do Videobrasil, dedicated to Brazil’s art magazines between 1920 and 1990.

Paulo Venancio Filho is a critic, curator and professor of Art History at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. He has published articles on modern and contemporary Brazilian artists, among them Cildo Meireles and Hélio Oiticica. He has also curated exhibitions in Brazil and abroad, including ‘Rio de Janeiro 1950–1964’, a segment of Century City: Art and Culture in the Modern Metropolis (Tate Modern, London, 2001), and Soto: A Construção da Imaterialidade (CCBB, Rio de Janeiro, 2005).

Catherine Petitgas (MA, History of Modern Art, Courtauld Institute, London) is a lecturer in Modern and Contemporary Art. Collector, patron and benefactor of several institutions in the UK and France, she is a trustee of the Whitechapel Gallery, London, and of Gasworks/Triangle Arts Trust. In addition she has been a member of the Tate Latin American Acquisitions Committee since 2004 as well as a member of Pompidou America Latina.nnale.
